The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is presented annually to a photographer whose past work and proposed project, as judged by a panel of experts, follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith's concerned photography and dedicated compassion exhibited during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist.

Night Photography Fans

Saturday's full moon is supposed to be humongous...the largest one since 1993 or something like that.  It might be interesting for all you night photography enthusiasts out there. 

MARCH MEETING

We had a smaller meeting this month. March's subject was "Wildlife". We had some jellyfish, some wild turkeys, a silver-back gorilla, a tiger, a parrot & a lizard. After critique, Noel gave a lighting demo.

April's subject is going to be "Sports/Action". And that meeting will take place on Wed April 20th, 2011.

Gearing up for the next meet.I took this shot in India during a morning walk on a hiking trail.One of the most ostentatiously adorned creatures on Earth, the peacock uses its brilliant plumage to entice females.

It is a wild life

Given that most of my free time involves walking my dogs, getting ready to walk my dogs, or coming back from a dog walk, I have lots of dog pictures.  I know...weird dog lady, right?  At least I'm not the sad cat lady. No matter what, I'll always have that consolation. 

In the spirit of wildlife photography, I'm sharing a picture in preparation for our March get together.

While I'm out looking for Arizona wildlife, I thought I'd share one of my previous shots. This is a Snapshot I took at the Washington DC zoo. caught an albino squirrel running around during a visit. Shot it with a Canon AE-1 Program (don't recall the lens) about 1990.

Tonight's meeting critiqued our "Still Life" &  introduced us to Luis Garcia. He is a professional photographer who has traveled the world shooting & brought 3 of his published books for us to look at. He is returning to his hometown of Nogales to setup shop. Check him out.

Still life photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition.
Still life photography is a demanding art, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with compositional skills. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them. Knowing where to look for propping and surfaces also is a required skill.

We are a group of photographers – of all levels – who come together for a monthly meeting – where we critique our photographs, discuss & learn from each other.

We just started this Fall 2010 & the word is getting around.
